Just Autumn
There’s a cat three blocks down from the hotel I am staying in. A regular, rather corpulent and beautiful tomcat sitting on a porch of a grocery store, basking in the last autumn sunlight.
There’s a cat plate with cat chow in it next to him.
People feed him.
People are good and kind.
The picture is pretty idyllic and complete but one thing: the cat is totally blind.
His eyes are all milky at the bottom and he startles and pokes his nose awkwardly in my cold hands every time I stroke him.
There are people constantly going up and down the porch and the cat on it.
The students, the retired, men and women go in and out of the grocery store. Day in, day out.
But unfortunately, no one takes pity on the poor cat and no one takes him home.
That’s us…
That’s life…
That’s just autumn…
